Becoming a new mother is an exciting time full of incredible changes. While most of those changes are welcome, some might not be good for you or your baby. It is important to take care of your teeth while you are pregnant, and to be aware of changes that can impact them.
While many women experience no adverse side effects to their teeth during pregnancy, some issues are not uncommon. One is “pregnancy gingivitis,” a mild form of periodontal disease that can be brought on by hormonal changes. As with any gingivitis, it can be prevented by effective brushing and flossing, but if left untreated can lead to serious problems, even affecting your baby. Maintaining good oral hygiene is especially important during pregnancy.
Tooth decay can also pose more of a problem during pregnancy. Morning sickness increases the amount of acid your teeth get exposed to, which in turn increases the possibility of developing cavities. Diet can also fluctuate during pregnancy. Eating more sugar can also cause decay by feeding the acid-producing bacteria in your mouth. Try to eat healthy foods, especially when snacking.
Some women are concerned about what kind of dental treatments they can receive while pregnant. Know that any routine care can be done as normal. Urgent procedures, like fillings, extractions, or root canals can also be performed. Local anesthetics and X-rays pose no risk to you or your baby. You should postpone elective procedures, like whitening, until after your baby arrives.
